Facebook founder promotes the importance of play

Upon the arrival of Facebook Co-founder and Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg’s second child, Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla published a letter through their own Facebook page urging their newborn daughter to play outside and enjoy the wonders of being a child.

The letter focuses on Zuckerberg’s daughter’s childhood, rather than her future and encourages her to not “grow up too fast”.

The world can be a serious place…that’s why it’s important to make time to go outside and play…I hope you run as many laps around our living room and yard as you want. And then I hope you take a lot of naps.

Some have commented, including the BBC, that the letter is “at odds with the aims of the billionaire’s social media empire”. Nevertheless, it is refreshing to see a mindset that encourages the freedom of childhood and play in an age where there is an increased risk to children and young people’s physical and mental health that has been caused by the digital evolution.
